Twittering...

I would have to confess that when I first found out about twitter I was not impressed at all. It seemed like a copy of a trivial facebook feature and trying to make it into a business. However, I signed up two days ago only to find myself addicted to the stream of information flowing from absolute randomers! It's fun, albeit not unique, but definitely a useful way of keeping up with current affair and also gaining interesting insights into other people's lives which they feel ok sharing with everyone.

What twitter offers is very different to any social network experience; they combine the concept of quirky journalism to promote conversations and sharing of experiences first hand through networking rather than the painful "Add to Friends" strain.

I must say that twitter's simplicity is their biggest competitive advantage, the day they try to make this any more sophisticated may spell their doom.

And as for the long debated monetization of twitter I don't think there struggle will be any different than facebook's; social media clearly needs a business model and twitter isn't alone in this area.

Social Media

All this hype about social media is pretty mundane! I don't think anyone has a clear idea of what exactly social media is suppose to achieve. Ok fair enough it allows a wider community to contribute and produce tons n tons more stuff than corporates. But more information just means it will become ever so hard for users to actually find the relevant info!

The problem is not the amount of content but it's quality and access to it (it's amazing how some of the brightest minds simply ignore this super trivial fact!) We need to equip everyday users with tools which help them produce quality content (not just content!), reach their targeted set of audience and be discovered in a blink of an eye!

Sites like digg are great in sharing and discovering content on the web but at the end fo the day its just a big database of links with very little semantic info.

All in all social media as percieved today will only clutter the already messy internet space unless we get superman to organise this mess up!
